mplayer fails on FC4 x86_64

I recently installed mplayer to try to get media content under Firefox.
I always get the same error no matter what content I try and access with it.
Initially it reports that its buffering and then I get an error message:
Error: mplayer execv: No such file or directory

Any suggestions?

What kernel are you running? What version of mplayer are you running?

Code:

rpm -q kernel
rpm -q mplayer
uname -a

Your reply prompted a further step - you asked about mplayer and I found I didn't have it installed, I had just installed the mplayer-plugin; I checked the readme for the plugin and it said it was dependent on mplayer. So I installed it - these are the versions from the three commands you gave:
# rpm -q kernel
kernel-2.6.11-1.1369_FC4
kernel-2.6.13-1.1532_FC4
kernel-2.6.14-1.1637_FC4
# rpm -q mplayer
mplayer-1.0-0.lvn.0.28.pre7try2.4
# uname -a
Linux Tim64FC.ChurchMeadow33.home 2.6.14-1.1637_FC4 #1 Wed Nov 9 19:01:56 EST 2005 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Now when I try to use the plugin in Firefox to access a video off the BBC site it gets much further, it goes through the following stages:
Buffering
Connecting
Connected

Before finally anouncing:
Stopped

and nothing else happens.

I experimented and managed to play an mpg file from the command line using mplayer and then I navigated to the same file using Firefox (file://) and managed to play it using the plugin.

So I guess it's OK playing mpg files, but perhaps not for streaming video from a website.

This is an example of a link from the BBC website that I can't play:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sol/ukfs_sport...toryid=4474950

It works fine on a Windows machine in IE.

In what format is the streaming media you're trying to access?

hedgert 12-09-2005 01:28 PM

Thank you for your reply to my question asking about the format of the streaming media. It's taken a while for the BBC to get back to me with the information.

They tell me the files are real media files.

Are these playable with the mplayer plugin? And if not, how do I stop mplayer trying to play them so I can use Real instead?

I would install the plugger rpm. The rpm's actual name might be mozplugger, but I'm not sure. Once you have that installed, you can navigate Firefox to "about:plugins", and you'll find that plugger has setup all of the correct file associations.
