mplayer dvd problems

I know this question has been asked here before, but looking over the other posts didn't give me any solutions that I haven't already tried. I just finished installing mplayer and gmplayer, with all of its dependencies, and I downloaded and installed rpms (rh9) libdvdcss-1.2.8-1fr.i386.rpm and libdvdread-0.9.3-fr1.i386.rpm. and I used ln -s /dev/hdc /dev/dvd to set up (and I checked that hdc was the correct device). However, when I try to run a DVD in mplayer or gmplayer, I still recieve errors, however the errors are different depending on how I am logged in.

As regular user:
Playing DVD title 1
Reading disc structure, please wait...
libdvdread: Can't open file VIDEO_TS.IFO.
Can't open VMG info!

As root:
Playing DVD title 1
libdvdread: Could not open device with libdvdcss.
libdvdread: Can't open /dev/dvd for reading
Couldn't open DVD device: /dev/dvd

Does anyone know what I might be overlooking?

Well the first thing is to check and see if you have a /dev/dvd, it's just a stmbolic link to the location of your dvd drive (like /dev/hdb or /dev/hdb)

Where is your dvd player plugged in? (Primary slave, Secondary master, etc)

mplayer

Kindly look for the rpm in the installation cd. look for the dependencies of your rpm. Maybe its on the 2nd or 3rd disk.
