perhaps the file you are trying to play has a WMV10 codec, which is AFAIK not yet supported by mplayer.

Is that a typo? Should be
Code:
mplayer /home/lando/Sharon.wmv
Can you play it with the -novideo switch? Have you tried another video output?
Here is mplayers docs if they help.

As you can see in your links >>>

6.1.3. ASF/WMV files

ASF (Active Streaming Format) comes from Microsoft. They developed two variants of ASF, v1.0 and v2.0. v1.0 is used by their media tools (Windows Media Player and Windows Media Encoder) and is very secret. v2.0 is published and patented . Of course they differ, there is no compatibility at all (it is just another legal game). MPlayer supports only v1.0, as nobody has ever seen v2.0 files . Note that ASF files nowadays come with the extension .WMA or .WMV.

DESCRIPTION

mplayer is a movie player for Linux (runs on many other platforms and CPU architectures, see the documentation). It plays most MPEG/VOB, AVI, ASF/WMA/WMV, RM, QT/MOV/MP4, Ogg/OGM, MKV, VIVO, FLI, NuppelVideo, yuv4mpeg, FILM and RoQ files, supported by many native and binary codecs. You can watch Video CD, SVCD, DVD, 3ivx, DivX 3/4/5 and even WMV movies, too.

THEN ASF/WMV is supported by mplayer ...and this is my file (if you see
mplayer log I posted at the beginning....)

Playing ///home/lando/Sharon.wmv.
ASF file format detected.

I'm not sure what you are getting at. I know that Mplayer does play .wmv, .wma, .asf etc. You either have a bad file, wrong codec package, using the wrong video out, etc. Have you tried using another video out? That would be the -vo switch. Will the file play with no video? The -novideo switch? Does the file play with Windows media player? And as for

mplayer ///home/lando/Sharon.wmv
your syntax is wrong.

Does that file reside only on your machine or can you provide a link to the stream?

I've tried all of the -vo ,of course.I've not Windows media player.
The path to the file has no problem at all.I get on video file images
as I was using a wrong codec....(geometric figures with many colors...) .
The problem arise with many files I've downloaded using Amule...no way to have them in a different way ,I'm afraid . They are files from films with
Sharon Stone ....If you have amule /emule you can try...

mplayer won't play anything that is encrypted and has microsoft's digital rights management deployed. This includes wmv files created for media player 10.
