mplayer audio visual effects

Hi all,
What I am interested in doing is somehow getting mplayer to show a visualisation on screen when it is given a playlist of songs (similar to winamp, media player). I have read that xine is able to do this, is it possible to get something similar working with mplayer?

I need it to be a plugin or similar for mplayer itself - instead of just a simple application that monitors the audio output - as I need mplayer to be the currently selected window. Actually if anyone knows of any separate programs also then I may be able to do it another way. Thanks for any help in advance.
