mplayer and xmms cannot share arts

i am confused, i was playing xmms and launched mplayer to preview a movie, and mplayer says that audio device is used by another program so no sound! can't applications share arts sound driver? i mean, do i have to close an application before using another app, which may be sharing a common program?

You shouldn't have to no. It depends on a few factors though. For one, I wouldn't use arts for anything. Use the ALSA or at least OSS sound drivers and disable arts. The other thing is the sound card you have. I have an ASUS A7N8X mobo and the onboard sound wont handle sound from 2 apps at a time. This is due to shitty nvidia drivers. I don't know if any other sound cards have this problem, but I haven't heard of any. My Audigy has no trouble with sound output from multiple apps.
