yes I've tried all of the available options but the screen stays blank...
I've also now installed mplayer, and I get a blank screen watching movies with that as well... this is the output from the terminal:

I'm starting to think there's something goofy about the ati driver and the way it either outs video or the way I have it setup... I'm going to keep fiddling, hopefully someone knows what's going on...
