Dear all.

I have the same problem with mplayer and xine.
When I used them to play mpeg/CD, the video remains blank but the audio was played normally.

My video card is neomagic (laptop), and the video driver is vx.

Any clues ?

i think its codec problem, here is my final steps for installing and configuring mplayer , uninstall mplayer and then strat process from begining , and i think codec will also solve xine problem

I'm pretty sure my installation was like your suggestion.
(extralite, compile MPlayer-targz, fonts, and skin).

And this is not my first mplayer installation.
It was working on the same computer with Slackware,
but this time the distro is Vector Linux.

Interestengly, both mplayer and xine are having
EXACTLY THE SAME problem,
although Mplayer's codecs and xine's codecs are different.

So I guess this is someting with lower level than codecs.
Maybe X, maybe framebuffer. I can't figure it out.

hey all I thought i'd bring this thread back up because I'm having the same problem... running slack 9 with 2.4.20 kernel, xfree86 is 4.3.0 and I'm using the fglrx drivers from ati for my radeon 8500 which I know are working becuase the glxgears gives me results far better than the regular drivers.

I installed the xine packages and the gxine frontend and while I can hear the audio for really any kind of video I want to watch, I can't see the video. I installed all the codecs I could to /usr/lib/win32 and still with no luck.

interestingly enough when I use the xine ui, the top 1/4 or so of my screen goes all nutty with magenta bands, while in gxine all I see is a blank window.

I've read the xine faq's they have and they mention an "XV" video driver that they use be default. I really have no idea what they're talking about, and I'm assuming that the ati drivers I have must un some way support this method of viewing video.

I'm really at a loss and any help would be appreciated. If you need more info on my setup, ask and ye shall receive.

click on the xine setup, and change the video out method.

yes I've tried all of the available options but the screen stays blank...

I'm starting to think there's something goofy about the ati driver and the way it either outs video or the way I have it setup... I'm going to keep fiddling, hopefully someone knows what's going on...

Regarding to mplayer, bad ... very bad.
It can not run at all now.
I'm using plastic skin. I can see only black remote control now.

Whatever, I'm going to delete mplayer and using xine.

haha I actually got it working a day or so ago...

I downloaded an open gl plugin for xine, whic of course it didn't like, so I renamed the open gl plugin to the xv plugin that xine seemed to love so much and wouldn't play without, and it seems to be working now! all manner of video including dvd's are running great

On to the next hurdle... copying all my mp3's and movies onto my linux martition and expanding it as my windows partition gets smaller... the plan is to phase out windows

Glad you got it working eventually - it would bother me not to use mplayer tho - I really like it.

I would check that you have all the latest drivers for your card and installed it correctly same with the codec.
Also have you tried all types of media?
- Mplayer install went real smooth for me. I really like it.
Yeah I phased out my win box too - really happy with everything and linux is just so much more personal.

I could figure it out now.

The xine and mplayer was not working because the XF86Config-4 was:

I commented out the OverlayMen option and it solved the problem.

Regarding to mplayer did not show the plastic skin, it was because I was using IceWM. It has bug on background/root. I turned off grabroot and background, then mplayer is working now.
