mplayer and WinTV card
According to the documentation, mplayer is suppposed to be able to talk to a TV card. I have the Hauppauge WinTV card that works great with xawtv. There's that headline-sized warning in the mplayer doc's that that section of the code is not being worked on, and I shouldn't expect it to work w/o tweaking. I had no luck so far.
Has anyone here been able to do that? Thanks, mlp |
yes, it works fine. just follow the examples and it should work no problem. doesn't do anything worthwhile though, stick with xawtv

Thanks Chris,
what I really want to do is to use it with mencode to capture the video in some format. I tried dvr but it's too complicated and doesn't (easily) allow to script it and do it preprogammed at certain times. I used the various example command lines in the mplayer doc but it complains about formats. What exactly do you type? And do you see a picture in the end? Thanks, mlp |
if you read some of the mplayer-users emails there is plenty on there about sound recording not being properly supported. they've added it recently but it's not too hot yet, and if the sound goes wonky, then there's little point in using it. i've had some results from FFMPEGrec or nuvrec or mp1e

I've been thinking of putting together a digital video recorder and have started to research this. I'll need a card with an S-video out for playback. It seems the correct Happauge card is the WinTV-D, model##697. Has anyone else done this in the U.S.? The sites I see were for satellite tv recorders in Europe (Germany in particular). Anyone have any ideas?

there's a number of threads about this kinda project on the mplayer-users list as well, even though they're nto really that relevant to mplayer http://mplayerhq.hu

Is this problem still a... problem? I just (tonight) bought me a WinTV GO card (boo for the name, but according to your posts works in linux fine) and am getting ready to install it. I am just wondering what is the easiest (quality is more important actually, but I figure ease first, then I'll work on qualiy ;) ) way to capture TV with it? Any suggestions? Any pointers on getting the card rolling? Where is the module located at (I'm going to have to rebuild my kernel, I know I didn't include support since I just built my kernel last night ;)? Thanks Cool |
Ok, running into a bit of hardware trouble getting this thing installed... I will try once more on a kernel config, and then post up a new thread if I can't get it goin.
Cool |
vt recording with mplayer is utterly utterly perfect now. the command line is a bit unweidly, but when i'm finished with acidrip i think i'm going to make a lightweight tivo-esque program for it.

Sweet! Thanks for the update :)
