mplayer and Debian help please

Code:
media:/usr/src/mplayer# cd MPlayer-1.0pre5/
media:/usr/src/mplayer/MPlayer-1.0pre5# DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS="--disable-runtime-cpudetection--enable-gui--enable-streaming--diable-rtc--enable-live--enable-real--with-reallibdir=/usr/src/mplayer/rp9codecs/" fakeroot debian/rules binary
-su: fakeroot: command not found
media:/usr/src/mplayer/MPlayer-1.0pre5# DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS="--disable-runtime-cpudetection--enable-gui--enable-streaming--diable-rtc--enable-live--enable-real--with-reallibdir=/usr/src/mplayer/rp9codecs/" debian/rules binary
dh_testdir
make: dh_testdir: Command not found
make: *** [configure-stamp] Error 127
following instructions from here

little out of date, but more accurate then any other walkthough i could find. what is fakeroot, and is it something that should be in my system? if it is how do i get it, and or what do i do to finish installing and configuring mplayer for my debian sarge distro...

i also get these errors when trying to install via apt-get

Code:
media:/usr/lib/win32# apt-get install mplayer-586
Reading Package Lists... Done

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
mplayer-586: Depends: libdirectfb-0.9-20 but it is not installable
Depends: libdvdread3 but it is not installable
Depends: liblircclient0 but it is not installable
Depends: libtheora0 but it is not installable
E: Broken packages
media:/usr/lib/win32# apt-get install mplayer-386

if apt-get is supposed to resolve, download, and install all required packages for software, then why will it not install, download, and configure those???

*frustration setting in*... very steep learning curve and trying not to get frustrated, but getting there very fast... at least with yum things WORKED....

All I can say apt-get is just like urpmi and yast. All of them have similar problems. You can look for sites to add servers to apt-get or compile mplayer. I suggest compiling mplayer. You can compile it for what devel packages you have and then re-compile until you get the devel packages.
