MPD - Does this Actually Work or What?

I heard about mpd and it sounds awesome but it just doesn't seem to work. The goal is to play back music stored on our headless server (ubuntu 12.04 LTS) on our mobile devices and tablets.

The mpd server is up and running and the database is built out. When clients connect and pick a song to play it looks like its playing but there is no sound.

After some standard troubleshooting I realized that since the server has no desktop it didn't have pulseaudio so I installed that.

I followed this guide and still no luck
http://mpd.wikia.com/wiki/PulseAudio

There is no sound on any of the network clients. I don't know if it works locally because its a headless server and doesn't have a desktop environment (or speakers for that matter).

MPD doesn't, by default, stream music to clients -- the clients are used to control music which plays on the server machine. If you look in the config file though you will see that there are sections for output and I believe you can set it to output as http so clients can connect.

I just looked in mpd.conf and found this link:

Wow, well I feel like a fool. I enabled verbose pulse logging and scouring the pulse, syslog, and mpd logs everything looked like it was functioning correctly. Then I read your reply and plugged an old pair of speakers into the server and yup... it's playing on the server. I completely mis-understood what this product was for!

If I could vote you up again I would because this is almost exactly what I was trying to do. Thank you.

Glad I could help. I didn't know exactly what mpd did until fairly recently -- the whole client/server aspect does make it seem like a streaming server until you read up a bit more.
