MP3 to AAC conversion on Linux (for IPOD)?

Is there any Linux solution for converting generic mp3 files to AAC based "m3b" files, to take advantage of the IPOD shuffle's bookmark feature?

No leave it as mp3

I do not know of one. IF you switch to ACC you will not be able to listen to the music in Linux. In the perferences for itunes you can pick mP3 for imported music. I dont have an ipod but my music libary is a mix of purchased music from apple and sounds ripped from my CD's . IMHO dont do it use mp3

Audiobooks without bookmarks are really not feasible. I may just have to stick to a different player that has bookmarks for mp3's.

AAC does play

I just downloaded an aac with .m4a extension and it does play in linux. I opened it with kaboodle which is a very small kde media player. Looks like you'll want to take a look at http://www.audiocoding.com/. Home of FAAC. It looks what it will probably work for you.
