Question MP3 problems with XMMS and all other players

i have an mp3 file that works fine on my windows XP machine, all mp3's that i try to run with XMMS dont work... what happens:-
(my sound is working fine btw)

I click on open > kryptonite.mp3

the dialog disappears, apparently with kryptonite.mp3 opened, i click the "play" button and it comes back up with the open dialog, i selected kryptonite.mp3 again, and when i clicked "play" it came up with the dialog once more. What am i doing wrong?

Well RedHat dumped mp3 support for xmms they are shipping, so the options are ether install xmms from its mother website or get a plugin from the same site which happens to be http://www.xmms.org

Does it play if you enter "xmms kryptonite.mp3" from the console. (With kryptonite.mp3 in the path?)
Do you have the "libxmms" package installed.

If you look in the kde setup -> components -> file associations
Is there an audio/x-mp3 file type.
If so, is xmms listed in the Application Preference list?

These are the mime type attributes assigned to xmms on my system. I got it from the extended section of the menu editor rather than looking though each mime section as above.
Attributes: mime types
value: video/mpeg;audio/x-mp3;audio/x-ogg;application/x-ogg;audio/x-mpegurl;audio/x-wav
