MP3 Problem ubuntu hardy.

Hello all,

I currently have a problem. I am using ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. However, i cannot play mp3 files under any program. I have amarok, xine, totem-xine, rhythem box all installed and none of them work.

I have installed all the mp3 codecs i can find. Gstreamer, all the medibuntu stuff. Still no dice.

All the programs load the mp3 properly, however they freeze when trying to play them back. I have to a kill -9 to get the program to close. Has anyone experienced this before? Is there an easy solution?

I am a bit new to linux so if any other information is required please specify. Thanks for the help!

edit: i have tried converting the mp3's to ogg's using mp32ogg and it does the same thing.

How did you fix it??

How did you fix it?? I'm having the exact same problem and I tried to install restricted extras package with: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras
but I get errors that it can't find the repository.

my problem turned out to be that something else was using the sound.

My browser was open with youtube. Apparantly you can only have one application using the sound drivers at one time. when i closed my browser, my mp3's magically started playing.

I THINK you can get around this with oss, but i havent been able to successfully set it up so i'm sticking with alsa for now.

To get the non-free stuff, you have to add some sites to your build. Search for medibuntu in google and you will find some good walkthroughs.

hope this helps.
