I have an Archose Gmini 400 mp3/avi player. I love the thing to death. To get the most out of the music browsing systems on portable mp3 players though, you have to keep all your ID3 tags up to date (most of mine still arent). When i was running windows i found that Musicmatch was the best for doing this. There were tons of features for ID3 editing and im trying to find a comprable editor for Linux (Mandrake 10.0). So far i have found EasyTAG and its very good and fast, but there are a few more things i would like it to do. These are some of the features i used regularly in Musicmatch and would like to have in my Linux editor.
edit multiple tags at once
create Tag from Filename
create Filename from Tag
attach CD Cover Art to Tag for viewing on mp3 player (I think this is a feature native to ID3v3 tags)
EasyTAG can do all of this except for the Cover Art part. I guess it isnt completly necessary but if my mp3 player supports it i would like to use it.
Im going to have to boot to windows to transfer the files to my player anyways because linux cant handle the file transfer from my USB very well (extremely slow compaired to when i was using windows). Id rather not use windows more than i have to though so id like to tag this stuff on linux. Please Help.
There is a program called 'musicman' that gives you a context menu entry in konqueror. All of the features that you mentioned are in the menu except attaching CD cover art to the tag. But you can use it to produce mp3 CD covers. It will also produce an html index page where you could access your collection
It's a pity I can't help you very much on the ID3v3 tags, but maybe I can say something about the file transfers under linux, and the speed issue. I had the same problem I believe, and there's something about USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 I think.
There are two Modules / in kernel items, ehci.ko is for the 2.0 USB-part, uchi.ko is for the 1.1 USB part. If both modules are loaded at the same time, like I had once, strange problems occur, your mp3-player being unmounted and mounted differently without a cause. But maybe check if the right one of these 2 modules, and not both, are loaded, with:
$ lsmod, or if they're in kernel, look in:
$ make menuconfig.
well the thing about that is. the computer has a pair of built in USB 1.1 ports and i added a 4 port USB 2.0 PCI card. I heard someone say that if you buy a cheaper USB PCI card and try to run it with linux you might as well just not do it. ive only been using linux for a week so im gonna have to ask my friend about what you said.
btw. i guess the only other feature i need in an ID3 tagger is to add cover art to the tag, everything else is fine using EasyTAG. thanks anyways though.
Don't have any experience with it (yet), still searching for a program like EasyTag that has integrated musicbrainz support and that's a bit faster. I access my MP3s over SMB and adding/changing an ID3 tag takes ages, it seems to download the whole MP3, change it and then upload it again.
