I've searched the forum already but no solution works.
I cannot get mp3 support in Amarok. If I try to play one it tells me that support is not installed and asks if I'd like to install it. I click yes and libxine-extracodecs gets installed, but still no mp3. I've closed Amarok, I've rebooted, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling various components but NO luck - I just keep getting the same message asking if I'd like to install support for mp3.
Does anyone have any ideas? This whole anti-proprietary codecs thing in Ubuntu drives me mad.
for mp3 playbck in linux you need the "lame" codecs. try to install them using synaptic.
also the whole anti-proprietery driver thing is in all linux's sadly. all other distros also require you to install the mp3 codecs seperately, its the one thing that is holding linux back sadly.

Nah, I already have lame, I've been ripping CDs with it. Amarok just seems to be choosing to ignore both lame and the xine-extracodecs.
Slackware doesn't have this problem, all the codecs are there at the start. Sadly Patrick thinks the world is still using a 2.4 kernel
