mp3 encoding hangs system
Greetings.
I'm runnning Mandrake 9, 2.4.19-16. I have tried the supplied oggenc, also a borrowed copy of xingmp3enc, and a locally compiled copy of bladeenc. When I try to encode mp3's from .wav files, the system hangs and a reset is required. I usually run a loop, sometimes a few songs will get done, other times it won't get thru the first one. I have found nothing in logs pointing to a cause. I've tried creating the .wav's with cdda2wav and cdparanoia, no difference. Same thing happens in and out of X. I'm stuck. Anyone else out there had this type of problem??? Thanks, Eric |

encoding eats up your cpu and if you use simultaneous encoding the system reaches a saturation point and it just hangs!!! well i hope that it answers your question maybe you should use few processes while encoding |
rch: Thanks, I have watched a few log files for entries before the
hang with no luck. I'll look at processes and post anything relevant. BTW, I have an older Dell laptop running the same version of Mandrake, same kernel, I networked it to my PC so I rip the CD's on the PC then do the mp3 encoding on the laptop. Haven't given up yet, just a workaround... I did see a kernel panic doing the encoding once on the PC, but that hasn't happened again. |
In the general forum, there is a post about "best mp3 ripper'.
So far, IMHO it's Konqueror. Put your cd in, open Konq, type audiocd:/ in the location bar. It has CDDB support and you can encode in just about any format you want. I learned about this from bulliver's post. |
