Is the sound really distorted, as if you had the volume turned up too loud? And what media player app are you using (e.g.: xmms, kaboodle, etc.)?

If you're getting a lot of distortion, try turning down the output gain on the media player app. xmms has a volume control on both the main window and the equalizer. If you've bumped up the bass & treble in the equalizer, you should drop the EQ's gain until the distortion goes away. The same applies if you're using any audio plugins, which can often cause the output signal to be hotter than normal (if I remember correctly, wav files and audio CDs won't cause this problem because they're not routed through the effects).
