How do I set the "MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME" environment variable on a Debian system?

"export MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME=/path/to/mozilla"

That's my problem. I think the path is /usr/lib/mozilla, but when I use "export MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME=/usr/lib/mozilla" I get no response. Neither Mozilla nor Galeon work. The message that comes up is that the MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME variable is not set. Curiously, Firebird works.
