Mozilla Thunderbird Install

The Thunderbird install instructions for Linux say to just untar the file and run the program. I have two questions:

1) for consistency with other programs, where should I put the Thunderbird folder?

2) what command do I type so that I can type "thunderbird" from anywhere in a terminal or "run" menu and launch it ? (I think this has something to do with Symbolic links, but I'm not 100% sure where I should create the link to allow this.)

Thanks,

a good location would be /usr/local

as root change directory /usr/bin
ln -s /usr/local/firebirddirectory/firebird executable ..........should work

Thanks,
