Mozilla Firefox Question(Browser identification.)
Does anyone know if Mozilla Firefox has a feature that disguises itself as another browser, i.e. Netscape or IE? I know Konqueror has this. I thought I heard about Firefox having this ability. If they do what extension is it? Thanks

maybe try typing about:configure in the address bar and see if such a thing exists? |
Nope, as far as I can tell there is no such thing yet, at least I can't find anything. Give it time and I am sure Firefox will have something like that as long as it is secure.
Thanks Webwolf |
I don't believe Firefox has this capabilities but there is an extension. http://www.extensionsmirror.nl/index.php?showtopic=156# It is called User Agent Switcher. I haven't used it so I don't know how good it is or if it is buggy or not.

Thanks. I just tried it and it does work. I don't get the screen that says I need Internet Explorer, but I do get the screen that says I need Windows Media Player, hmmm, I wonder if there is one for that around somewhere. There are some good linux based players that would work but I would need to have them disguissed as Windows Media Player. Thanks again. Webwolf |
Really don't matter cause if for your javascript is enabled it can be retrieved from a script.

Can you explain that please? Thanks. Webwolf |

just in case you do not want to use the extension you can set the user agent manually:
1) Into the adressbar enter about:config 2) Right click => new => String 3) Preference Name: general.useragent.override 4) Preference Value: The user agent you want to be To undo the change just set the option to an empty string. cccc828 |

So the preference (user agent line,) should look like this? Internet Explorer 5.5 , if that is the one I need to use? Thanks. Webwolf |
Also Is there a way I can use about:config to somehow make it seem like I have Windows Media Player? I might be asking to much on this one, lol. And I went to the yahoo site. I had the extention set for the default and did as instructed above. It seems to have recognized it. I am going to uninstall the extention andsee if it still works. Thanks
EDIT: Yep, it still works so that answers one of my questions. Note to anybody that tried this. If you have the extention installed, add the new line to about:config then uninstall the extention then it will erase the new line you put in. No big deal I just added it again and it works fine. Also it should be noted that if you use thoose extentions for mozilla and you exit Mozilla while it's set to use a different ua, it will fail to start next time. I think, however this problem has been fix with updated versions of ua switchers so that it places your original string back on exit. |
