mozilla and kde freezes - I have to unplug

Hello!

At work I have 2 linux servers and they haven't crashed at all in the last three years. Recently I installed Mandrake 9.1 for home use and it was running stable so far. I didn't hande it very carfuly and I forced a few packages.
In the last few days I experienced regular Mozilla (and Netscape locks (sometimes when moving the mouse wheel). The problem is that everything locks (even "num lock"), and I cannot do anything but pull the plug out. I wonder if this could be related to my installing nvidia drivers, forcing that 1-2 packages, or it is some known problem.

Thank you

pull the plug out
thats an expression right?

you're not really doing a hard reboot

are you?

yes

Yes that is the expression. and i'm doing it, because I cannot
ctrl+alt+backspace, alt+F1,2,3,4.. ctrl+alt+F9 etc.

such are the dangers of ignoring dependancies and forcing install

I am truely sorry

nvidea drivers? if your X has a lockup, it could be because of an driver problem.

there is one big problem with the drivers of nvidea; they are binary only. Because the kernel is constantly in development, the drivers get broken now and then. ..imho the Windows-way simply doesn't apply to Linux, because of the active kernel development, but I believe they don't share this idea... (and off course, there are other reasons to hide your source)

Try to re-configure /etc/X11/XF86Config, either by hand, or with some tool. does nvidea also provide such tool?

if your X ever gets a lockup; don't pull the plug yet! If your keyboard lights aren't flashing, your kernel is still working, and all other programs are still running too! In fact, you could login remotely (ssh, and putty for windows), and close all other programs, and even try to kill your X server.. ;) (but this might not work though). you could also type "reboot", to reboot your machine :D commands like 'top' 'ps auxf', 'kill' and 'kill -9' are your friends :)

ps. your machine has a reset button; use it instead of pulling the plug :p.

As to the () dependencies I shall ignore them no more.

I'll remove that driver just to see if it's causing it, but I'm getting rid of Mandrake anyway and installing Red Hat.

Thank you all for your help.
