Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

I am on slackware 9.1 installed over 8.1 (to keep some programs in 8.1 that are not in 9.1)
I am using mozilla 1.5, but I tried 1.4 to see if the problem was isolated to 1.5, it was not
I am trying to get java support, I doa symlink (ln -s) from the java plugin in the ns4-gcc32 directory into the plugins directory for mozilla
I start mozilla and check the help>plugins, it shows java and all its many components as loaded.
I go to a site that requires java and the browser crashes w/ an error (Not at computer at moment can't give exact error)
I used to make it work this same way, I beleaved it was with mozilla 1.4, but it could have been 1.3
in short to remember:
yes I am linking proper file
yes it is symlink
yes the java libs are in the ld.so.conf
yes I did an ldconfig
yes the browser sees the java plugin
yes I am doing what I have done before w/ different results and not sure what if any difference though I am not to arrogant to rule it out.
Java can be touchy about fonts and suchlike. If the way you installed slackware 9.1 installed over 8.1 has corrupted fontconfig or freetype, or if there's a font left from your old setup that isn't working with the new tools it could be causing Java to crash. Java uses fonts to render applets that scroll across the screen.
My first thought would have been the ones you suggested about gcc 3.2 and the symlink and all that. Hope you get it fixed.
I did not think of that, however after discovering the java errors I moved on to another project (cvs of mplayer) and had a font issue with that, I resolved the font issues leaving my system just righjt in the font area. thank you though, any other ideas?
