Unhappy movies playing upside down in mplayer but fine in totem

Hi, this is going to sound bizarre, because it is, but when I play any of my movies, (mpg, avi, asf and wmv) mplayer plays them upside down, but those that play in totem play the right way up. Anyone got any ideas why this is?

Background:
I installed the win32 codecs for totem to see if I could play my vids, but it didn't really work so then I installed mplayer from rpm. Went in the file associations and for every file type that had totem and mplayer in it I moved mplayer to the top of the list so that it was the default player.
When I clicked the ok button to update the file types it took absolutely ages and just kept going round in a circle, getting to 100% on updating the file types and then starting again so I pressed cancel and rebooted. I went back into file association and they all seem to have been updated anyway. Did I do something wrong? Try uninstalling mplayer and install it again? Any help would be great!

not heard anything like that before, i'd like to gues that they are using different video outputs, and the driver isn't rendering the one being used by mplayer very well. to see if this is the case, run mplayer using some different video outputs. for example "mplayer file.avi -vo x11" or "-vo xv"... i'd think that x11 is more likely to behave (and use much more cpu) that xv... if so i'd guess that totem is using x11 by default, as it's a simper interface.

and i'd have absolutely no idea about the association nonsense... use consoles!

I tried what you said and the movies play fine. Turns out that v_flip was set to "1" in ~/.mplayer/gui.conf. I changed it to "0" and now it works fine.

Thanks for putting me on the right track though!
