movie player in Ubuntu looks "washed out"

Hi I am fairly new to Ubuntu, but I like it so far. I notice that most of my videos work fine using movie player, but they look washed out. Any suggestions? I'd also like to reconfigure my soundcard. Is there any way of doing that? If I plug my external speakers into the green speaker jack, they are scratchy and noisy. If I plug them into the headphone jack they are okay, but the headphone jack is on the front of the computer and it looks bad. I have an XP partition on this computer and the speakers work fine in the speaker jack.

Thanks in advance,
Ken

Can't help you with the soundcard, but have you checked the brightness/contrast settings in the movie player you're using? That would cause the 'washed out' look you're seeing. It could also be a codecs issue; what type of videos are you playing? Mpeg, divx, xvid etc.?
