mouse not working in mc

I am having a problem with midnight commander in an xterm since I moved to kernel 2.6

The mouse doesn't work as it should, when clicked it just inputs characters onto the command line.

However the mouse works in mc in a console and the mouse works as expected in an xterm, i.e. cut and paste.

I have tried mc -x without gpm running and running gpm -R, but it makes no difference.

I have:-

mc 4.6
gpm 1.20.1
xterm 197

Any help would be much appreciated.

Ok, you can stop racking your brains now.

I needed to recompile mc with slang support.
