mounting vfat in mandrake 9.0
 

apparently there is a bug in the new kernel it does not support vfat and need it to do so since it does not support my modem and sound card i have to use windows to access the INTERNET please send me a fix for this bug to bentbike1@juno.com

Have you tried this, being root:
mount /dev/hdax /mnt/windows

Where x is your windows partition. And make sure that your /mnt/windows dir exists.

If you still get that error, you will have to recompile your kernel to add vfat support.

I installed MDK 9.0 and I have full access to vfat partitions. What kind of modem and sound card do you have?

yes that is my problem the kernal does not support vfat the modem is a win modem conexant and the sound is apllo there are drivers for both i switched from rhd 8 and everything was good and now man 9 will not support vfat partions nor my modem and that is the only way to download stuff so how do i fix this bug send a link if need be so i can print it out

did you try

mount -t vfat /dev/your/vfat/partition /path/where/you/want/it

when I used mdk 9 and tried to mount a fat32 partition it was very glitchy - I changed permissions on it and also tried putting it into fstab - it worked once but then i rebooted one time (into a different linux) and when i went back to mdk 9, I could not mount the drive anymore. very weird.

when i tried to mount the windows partion in man 9 i recive the message that the kernal does not support vfat so if i have to recomplie the kernal do i use the existing man 9 k or a newer one

MDK 9.0 default installed kernel does support FAT32 partitions i.e. vfat. I have installed this version on more than one PC and its worked the same on each one. I have seen one other post on the subject over at justlinux.com. No idea on what happened or how it was fixed. Might want to post the same question over there. Did you recompile the kernel install anything or change anything with modules etc from the original install?

If this was an existing partition before you installed linux then it would of been auto configured and you should have a /mnt/win_x directory for each existing windows drive. The partition will also be mounted at bootup. If you created the partition after the install then what did you use to create the partition and how did you format it. Also post your fstab file. Are you sure your mounting the correct partition?

As for the winmodem yes 9.0 provides support. You can also check and www.linmodems.org for additional help. You might want to go to MDK website and download the latest driver. You need to know if it is a hcf or a hsf modem.

I didn't see any support for an apollo? sound card. Are you positive this is correct?

You might want to list all of the your other hardware i.e. motherboard.

OK, try entering this into your /etc/fstab and rebooting.

/dev/hdX /whatevermountpoint vfat auto,default,umask=000

Then run
ls /whatevermountpoint

makdrake
 

since i last posted my hard drive containing my windows os has issues so i reinstalled everything on one drive it worked just fine i even could get the windows partion to be seen in mandrake where as before i could not i then whent and installed xpde a windows manager the installation did not produce any error messages but it did not show up in the duologue box so according to the duologue box whre i choose the desk top configuration i can drag and install the program that way that worked now today i cant start my xsever and the line command for startx is not there infact x86 does not exist and the rescue mode does not help so at this point i am going to just reinstall the os and the patch the kernel but i am wondering what is going on i heard last nite that an older kernal type was very sensitive in red hat and that the rh9 is much better what is really weird is that my sound chip was not seen during the first install and it worked in the second and now it is not recognized i am also getting a error message about some thing not being enough space followed by the no 2000 i not sure what this is referring to also i just read that slackware is supposed to be better than rh and man
