Mounting, formatting, and setting up my ipod

I'm not really sure what is going on with this ipod (it's been acting kind of weird, not responding correctly, even though it is almost brand new) and why it hasn't been automounted (hasn't showed up in My Computer), so I've decided to just start all over from scratch with it. I want to just format the whole thing and install this GNUpod package that I found, though I am having trouble figuring how to do that since, as far as I can tell, it is not mounted.

I am seeing this sda show up in /dev and the ipod is showing up in a couple of other files, however when I try to actually mount it, it says no can do. This might sound like a stupid question, but if there is only one sda, does there need to be an sda1? Not sure about the conventions on that sort of thing, as I am not finding an "sda1" anywhere.

What I have done so far is, after creating a directory "/mnt/ipod/", I added a line to the fstab, as follows:

/dev/sda /mnt/ipod vfat sync,user,noauto,umask=000 0 0

I am not sure if I should use sda or sda1 since I have not found an sda1 in my /dev. Next, when I try to mount the device, I get the following, whether I use sda or sda1 in the fstab.

linux:/dev # mount /mnt/ipod
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda,
missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

linux:/dev # mount /mnt/ipod
mount: special device /dev/sda1 does not exist

From what I found on a different website, I started messing around with the partition tables on the ipod, though I think this solution will work easier. Apparently, these instructions guided me to relabel the data partition as a Linux partition, erasing the FAT32 file system that was associated with it, perhaps. I'm not really sure what happened. At the moment there is one primary partition designated on the ipod, if that makes any difference.

I'm thinking that maybe Linux initially recognized the IPOD as having a FAT32 filesystem, even if it wasn't automounted, and then I went through and changed the filesystem associated with it, some settings in Linux system files were possibly left configured incorrectly.

dmesg says:

sda is the whole pod.

sda1 (on a windows formatted pod sda2 on mac formatted one) is the firmware.

sda2 (on a windows formatted pod sda3 on mac formatted one) is everything else.

If you don't get an sda1 you probably f'ed up your ipod and wiped the whole thing. you can't fix this from linux (unless you thought ahead and used dd to back-up the firmware) so I hope you have access to iTunes. subfs automounting sucks! I wouldn't even attempt to use it on an iPod. I've used fat32 and HFS+ iPods. The mac formatted ones (HFS+) work better (and yes I mean with linux.) do you maybe have access to a mac somewhere? you can fix the pod there and update to the newest firmware. this will get it like it was when you opened the box. then I can help you set it up with linux. even without auto mounting you can get gtkpod to mount it when it starts and eject it when it's done. I've got 2 mac formatted iPods (20Gb 4th gen & 60Gb 5th gen video) working with my gentoo systems and would like to help you get yours working, but now I think you must start over. If you can't get access to a mac for the 10min it takes to fix the pod you can use iTunes on windows but in the long run you might get more problems.

EDIT:
If you format it HFS+ be sure to disable journaling; this also must be done from a mac!

Well, I have progressed quite a bit on another route, though it is still not completely working. Initially, I followed some screwy instructions on a sourceforge page and messed up the partition table, on an ipod! Don't ask me. I can't believe they actually allow that sort of thing to exist on sourceforge, though something may have complicated it. Nevertheless, I had to repartition it with one partition and converted it to FAT. I then was finally able to mount it, finally. I then installed gnupod and a song on it and eventually, it recognized that it was an Ipod immediately when I plugged it in. The computer reads the song off of it just fine, however, when I try to play a song on it in standalone mode, it gives me these screwy lights flashing indicating some kind of error. Here's where things start getting weird. I am very new to Ipods, as well. When I plug in the Ipod and it prompts me saying that the Ipod has been inserted amd I open it, it directs me to ipod:/. This is the ipod program directory on the computer, right, or rather the ipod executable doing its work, organizing playlists and artists and utilities? Where I add songs and synchronize the computer and the ipod and stuff like that. When I try to synchronize it, I get this error:

An error occurred while loading ipod:/Utilities/Synchronize?really=OK:
The process for the ipod protocol died unexpectedly.

I am inclined to take your advice and start all over with a clean slate, though that will have to wait a few days, not to mention that I have already put a lot of time into this direction and would prefer to make it work this way. It seems to me that it is just a matter of configuration being wrong or something like that. Have you worked with gnupod before? There is an Ipod Control directory on it now. What would keep that from operating correctly.

you've repartitioned it with 1 fat partition. you've wiped out the iPod firmware. it still functions as an external disk but it will never work for playing music as an iPod. at this point the only way to fix it is to use the iPod restore tool from apple or some clever dd and partitioning work with the help of someone else using the same type of iPod in linux.
