Motion Dector in Linux with a Webcam

Hello Gurus and Newbies,
a former co-worker of mine told me that if you have a webcam you can have it setup in linux to be a motion detector, which is pretty cool. how would I go about doing this just for fun and is it hard to do because im not a programer but I have programed in the VI editor but not Emacs. ist there in RPM package that I can install?

It depends on what webcam you have. Check out http://www.smcc.demon.nl/webcam/. They have a lot of info on webcams for linux.

Also check out http://motion.sourceforge.net/
