Monitor "out of frequency"

I have Red Hat 8.0 runninng on a Toshiba Satellite 5100 laptop. Now I want to use a FLATRON LCD 568LM moniter via a USB cable. When I boot up, the linux boot text appears on the new moniter, but when it is time for the blue screen, the moniter goes black except for an error window which says
"out of frequency" ...tthen powersave....then times out in seconds
(i'm pretty sure this window is generated by the moniter itself).

I have tried changing

etc/X11/XF86Config

so that the horizontal and vertical scan ratess are what is specified in the specs for this monitor, but the problem
persists.

Is there another obvious thing to try?
How do you diagnose a problem like this?

I am just learning my way arround Linux, so any detailed info would be appreciated.

Thanks
Riddley

I've never run RedHat, so this may be a bit of a blind question, but do you also have a /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file as well as the /etc/X11/XF86Config you say you've edited? If you do, it -4 file will have priority.

There is no -4 file there....

what is Option "dpms" ???

this is also in the monitor section of the X11 file.

DPMS is, if I remember correctly, to do with power management of the monitor. I'm not quite sure why it's saying out of range if the values you typed in are correct, though you may as well post the XF86Config file here so someone else could take a better guess.

the modes of your monitor is not right
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "NVIDIA GeForce 4 (generic)"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 16
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1280x1024" "1280x960" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"EndSubSection
EndSection

Section "DRI"
Mode 0666
EndSection

edit these and remove "1280x1024 "1280x960"
this should solve it.
