modprobe: FATAL: Error running install command for sound_slot_1
 

...and sound_slot_2 and sound_slot_3. This is triggered when a Gnome session with Gnome-Volume-Control is started. I've been through all the /etc/modules.conf and /etc/modules.d configuration stuff (the Linux version of Windoze "dll hell" IMO) and nothing has made a difference, not even deleting all references to sound-slot-1 through 7. As soon as I crank up a Gnome session with the GVC applet or
manually start the mixer I can generate the messages.

It's retarded because I only have one sound card, and I can't find a way to tell GVC (or any other Gnome-Media package) that I only have one sound card and not to attempt
to run post-install scripts for 3 other sound cards.

FWIW this only started after installing kernel 2.6.8 (previous kernel was 2.4.27).

Any help anybody can give me on this would be appreciated. Thanks. :confused:

I've narrowed the cause down to the Gnome-Volume-Control applet. When the first Gnome session and subsequent VNC sessions with gnome-session as the application start, as soon as the applet is placed on the panel the FATAL error message(s) appear.

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST! MAKEDEV (sbin/makedev) script creates dsp1 through 3 no matter how many sound cards are present. 'fuser -v /dev/dsp(n)' shows which user owns the device, and no user owned dsp1 through 3. After deleting dsp1 through dsp3 the error messages are GONE.

All bugs must be killed.

crap, one of them is back! sound-slot-1, after a recent kernel recompile, to take OUT support for sound cards I do not have. This one is tricky...
