try find / -name "apm.ko" instead...

When/how exactly did this happen? You were trying to boot from a liveCD I take it? then maybe you could try booting with some kind of failsafe/noacpi boot option?

Stuperfied 06-10-2007 01:37 AM

find / -name "apm.ko"
/KNOPPIX/lib/modules/2.6.12/kernel/arc/i386/kernel/apm.ko
/ramdisk/lib/modules/2.6.12/kernel/arc/i386/kernel/apm.ko
/UNIONFS/lib/modules/2.6.12/kernel/arc/i386/kernel/apm.ko

Yes, you are correct. I just tried booting from the CD and this happened. I dont really know that much about Linux, im more microsuck for games but would gladly switch if wine were better. Do you mean "sudo modprobe apm failsafe/noacpi"?

sudo modprobe apm failsafe/noacpi
FATAL: Error inserting apm (/lib/modules/2.6.12/kernel/arc/i386/kernel/apm.ko): Unknown symbol in module or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

stzein 06-10-2007 01:45 AM

I don't really see what your problem is. can you boot into linux? If yes, then don't worry about apm or acpi or whatever.
If you can't boot, try typing 'failsafe' at the start of the boot process, when knoppix has a short countdown were you can give boot options. (you are using knoppix right?)

Stuperfied 06-10-2007 02:11 AM

No, I cant get into linux. Sorry, I should have mentioned the other part of the error I get when booting, which is the same error I just got when trying the failsafe option you suggested.

Starting the X Window System.....
Retrying with Server XFree86(vesa) .
Retrying with Server XFree86(fbdev) .
Error: No suitable X Server found for your card.
_ <- flashing cursor (hit enter)

root@tty1[/]#_

And in between all that on another blank screen is where I get the following message over and over again. After which, I tried all the rest that I have already told you.
modprobe :FATAL: Error inserting apm (/lib/modules/2.6.12/kernel/arc/i386/kernel/apm.ko): No such device

When I first got the error, I assumed that it was an incompatable video card. So I removed the agp card and used the onboard one but still got the same error.

stzein 06-10-2007 04:48 AM

I don't think the message about apm has anything to do with the video problem (apm = advanced power management).
Do you have a recent version of knoppix? Sometimes getting another version is the easiest way to fix your problem. Otherwise, try experimenting with the knoppix 'cheatcodes'. these are codes like the 'failsafe' you tried, and the most frequent ones can be found by pressing F2 and F3 on the start screen (where you typed failsafe).

It may also be useful to see if you can find a log file with some more info on what went wrong and post it here.
some candidates are /var/log/Xorg.0.log or /var/log/messages. you can display those files on your screen with the command 'cat' or try to print them to a printer with the command 'lpr' or 'lp', although this probably won't work right away, and setting it up is probably not worth the bother.

Stuperfied 06-10-2007 07:13 AM

Tried a few more boot options but nothing yet. The thing is that knoppix 3.8 will boot fine but 4.0.2 wont. I checked the 4.0.2 CD with the testcd option and theres no errors on the disk. So the question is, what is the difference between 3.8 and 4.0.2 that would stop it from working?

Edit: Oh, and I tried (sudo) cat /var/log/messages but it didnt work. Are you sure its cat?

stzein 06-10-2007 07:37 AM

I'm not a knoppix specialist, but if 3.8 works, why not stick with it, or maybe try the newest version (5.1.1)?

If you really want to know what goes wrong, try if you can find some log file like I mentioned in my previous post.

Stuperfied 06-10-2007 08:06 AM

I tried openning log files using cat as you suggested but it didnt work. Is this correct?

cat /var/log/messages

I tried it with and without sudo but it just didnt work. I even navigated to the directory and messages is there but I just cant open it. Any ideas?

stzein 06-10-2007 08:15 AM

cat /var/log/messages is correct.
maybe knoppix dropped you to a limited shell then, without access to many commands. you could try "vi /var/log/messages" but that probably won't work either.

Which messages were there on your screen above this:
Quote:

Starting the X Window System.....
Retrying with Server XFree86(vesa) .
Retrying with Server XFree86(fbdev) .
Error: No suitable X Server found for your card.
_ <- flashing cursor (hit enter)
you could try going up with SHIFT+PageUp in this situation.

Ok, i'll have to try all that tomorrow. Time for bed now. Updating to ver 5.1.1 would be out of the question since im on dial up at the moment and 3.8 is ok but im trying to get 4.0.2 to work in hopes that it will fix another problem im having with the game AAO. When I run it on 3.8 with wine, I get an error saying something about the program requesting that the visual basic runtime environment close it in an unexpected way or something like that. Also, it would be good to be able to actually use the latest version I have at hand. Ok, i'll let you know how my progress is going tomorrow and thanks also for all your help so far.

So there's a problem with fbdevhw. A quick google search reveals that this is a module for framebuffer device access...
If you boot up with
Code:

knoppix vga=normal
I think knoppix won't try to load fbdevhw then, but then you won't have great graphics either. Better would be starting with
Code:

knoppix xmodule=XXX
where you replace XXX by one of ati, fbdev, i810, mga, nv, radeon, savage, s3, radeon, svga (choose the one that matches you grapchips chipset)
Yet another option you could try is
Code:

fb1024x768
This uses a fixed mode.
