modifying $PATH in bashrc

what do I have to add to .bashrc in order to have ~/bin in my $PATH. I thought it was $PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin but that doesn't work.

As far as I know that should work, have you tried maybe '~/bin' or the full path to it, '/home/user/bin'

And yes, I just caught that as well with the $ sign as jqcaducifer mentioned to remove..

i didn't quite understand what trickykid said, but writing $test=abc with the value of test being "def" would be read by bash as simply typing def=abc into the commandline as a command, and therefore

bash: def=abc: command not found

Fixed. Thanks. It was the $ at the front.
