modemnot recognised in core 4

Ive installed fedora core 4 (kernel 2.6.11-1.i369_fc4) but it will not recognise my Modem (PCI XH1154) Ive downloaded the driver (intel-536EP-2.56.76.0.tgz) and unpacked it in a folder using the Archive program, what do I do now to get core 4 to recognize my Modem? I've followed the installation instructions (cd to Directory, make clean, make 536,make install) but this doesn't seem to work,I'm new to Linux so any help would be gratefully received.
