I have a laptop which was running fine and connected to the net fine on windows XP which was installed when i bought it new until we had a thunder storm one day then suddenly my modem wont connect it started dialling then just beeps like a 2 second beep with 1 second gap for about 3 mins then says modem trouble i tried to querey the modem and XP says its fine. I finally got round to installing Linux :-D I installed Fedora 5 on there and also Debian before that as it wouldnt on that either, i installed the modem and quered it and it give me the strings to say everything was fine but it still wont connect. Do you think the lightening could have broken the internal modem?

Please, Please help as its doing my head in now.

definitely, lighting can cause everything. Especialy modem is very sensitive to lighting. Because it is attach to telephone line (underground cable) which always give trouble, at least at my country.
