Minimal RH8.0 install

Hey guys/gals. I want to install RH8.0 but I want a very minimal install, without choosing "minimal." Basically, first I didn't install the Apache Web Server through the Install, but somehow I ended up with having a httpd.conf and apachectl. Then I went and I unchecked a lot more stuff; I installed NO server software, no dhcp, no web serv, no mail server, nothing like that. Somehow, I ended with Sendmail, how can I install RH without Sendmail? I really didn't check the "mail sever" box.

Basically, I want to just have GNOME with a few tools and I want to compile stuff like Apache2 and Qmail and stuff from source, or even if I used sendmail, I want to do it manually - without reverting to like Linux From Scratch for now. Thanks for any everyone.

Hey,

Just letting you know you're not the only one wondering what the hell is going on with RH.

I'm an old FreeBSD user and the simplicity that gave me from building a server where I knew exactly what was installed was great. I have to use RH now and building a recent RH8 system to try and do the same has proved very entertaining (NOT!).

I specifically selected NOT to install Apache 2, but alas, after an "rpm -qa", there was http-2.x-blah installed! OK, so the service wasn't started, but it was installed and I needed to install Apache 1.3.x with PHP and the like.

Any answers would assist me as well. Ta.

So you guys are saying that even though you specifically said not to install Apache, RedHat went ahead and installed it anyway?

I find that hard to believe but hey stranger things have happened.

nakkaya,

Yip. I know...but somehow, even though it didn't come up as a dependancy for anything, httpd-2.x was still installed. I'll repeat the process sometime soon and maybe document it.

I agree, it doesn't make sense and I would have thought that I was doing something silly until I stepped through it time and time again for a build doco... curiouser and curiouser...
