Migrating from a 686 to AMD64

I just moved my Linux install from my old PIII to a new AMD64 computer. I recompiled the kernel to reflect the new hardware and all the hardware seems to be working just great. My problem is this: Somewhere a config file is telling the computer that it is still on a 686 and because of that i get x86 packages from Debian's apt mirrors and get the following error when trying to install the GeForce driver for a AMD64:

running on Linux-x86.  Aborting installation.

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

You probably need to do a fresh install when going to a new type of CPU. The libraries should be named 'lib64xxxxx' for example. I think you may be running the AMD64 in the 32bit mode yet.

Hmmm, i was hoping that that wouldnt be the answer.......

Since i'm running Debian is there any way to make it go out and re download all packages of the AMD64 type with APT?

Yes. Look at "http://www.debian.org/ports/amd64/Debian -- AMD64 Port". (Disclaimer: I haven't done this, and it looks rather involved.)

Yea, i was just there and the mirror server seems to be down.
