Might need application to fix dim display

For some reason my X display goes dim after I switch from X to a console and back. The only way that I know to restore it is to restart X, but that is unacceptable since I also have to restart all of my applications. Does anyone know why this happens and what I could do to fix it (or at least a way to restore it without shutting X down)? Perhaps there is an application that could fix it as well. Any suggestions on all of this?

Any help would be much appreciated as I have looked into this subject before with no results...
