Midnight Commander (MC) slow start on high-end computer

Hy,

I'm running centos5 on a quad-core intel, 4gb ram.
Everything runs smooth except mc. After i type in the command i have to wait around 5 seconds... sometimes more before the well known screen comes up.
I've been searching the net and came up wih these solutions that didn't work for me:
1) verifying that the dns works right (nslookup responds instantly)
2) disabling ipv6 (i've already done that)
3) configuring ssh to work with xforwarding (with or without xforwarding mc starts with the same delay)
4) Mc is based on curses, so i've tried to run iptraf (also curses) and it loads instantly. Mcedit also loads instanly.

I must add that this happens both local and remote.
Services that run on the box: nfs mounted home.
I have no idea where to go from now.
Any reply/idea would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Treaz
