Metacity doesn't load in GNOME (no verbose errors at all)

If I start GNOME, it doesn't go any further than "starting the wm".
Metacity doesn't load without showing any error message.

Sadly this is Debian Etch, such horrible bugs shouldn't exist here.

If I add a new user, everything works again.
Being on Etch (aka "stable") I don't want that.

How do I fix Metacity for the existing/original user?

EDIT: changing the wm (using openbox) in GNOME works as well.
I don't want to change it though.
