memtest and linux 2.6

well ive got two questions, ive got an amd pc and was wondering whats the difference between the 386 or 686 image and the k7, and is there a significant difference, and once installed is it a good idea to uninstall the 386 image and leave the k7 by itself??? or does it need the 386 image files??? and another question whats memtest for??????
thanks for the help

Memtest is for testing for bad spots in your memory. A 386 image is optimized for a 386 machine and will work on pretty much any X86 machine and is used as a default for that reason most times. A K7 is built for an Athlon/Duron or better processor and will not run on an Intel cpu you will probably get a few percent better performance out of it. You can safely leave the 386 install kernel on the machine and in fact it is always a good idea to keep the original kernel you installed with around just in case you screw up your current working kernel so you have a know good backup.

686 is Pentium Pro and after and equivalents, and includes almost all the x86 computers in use today, so chances are that you should use the 686
