Memory usage

When I installed redhat 8 and later upgraded to redhat 9, I decided to install everything. I figured it wouldn't hurt since I had the hard drive space to burn. However, I recently checked my memory usage and was surprised to learn it is using 454/512 oh physical memory when all I have open is the system monitor and Mozilla. I looked through the process list and there is nothing in there to explain the high memory usage. Going by the process list I should be using ~150 mb. Does redhat just take up this much RAM?

Ahhh. Very interesting. So why does the system monitor make a graph that includes memory that is really free? I don't see of what use that would be.

Just curious, but do you know what the difference is between the way Solaris and Linux handles memory? I've written C programs and run them on both machines, and memory allocation errors act very different between the two. There are times that a program can run fine on linux but crash on Solaris. I would assume this is because Solaris doesn't let freed memory float around like Linux does?
