Media server questions(which one supports certain features)

Does anyone know of a media server that is cross platform(Linux & windows), that allow sorting of media files into folders? Easy to use on the client side, and nothing more complicated than an xml config file, or some sort of web browser configuration. Perhaps supports more than one media format, but I can convert the files over on my pentium 4.

XBMC is about as good (and as easy) as it gets. No cost, regularly updated, and beautiful to look at and use. The weather feature has been a little buggy lately, but that really wasn't their fault. http://xbmc.org/

XMBC has a server feature, that can be ran in the background?

EDIT:
I used a different search engine outside of google, and I discovered icecast. I wonder if it is any good, but I will have to do more research.

PS3 Media Server works pretty well and runs in the background. I have used it in the past. Just plain SAMBA and VLC to play everything works well also. I never tried XBMC on a Pentium 4. It has a 10 foot interface and isn't really designed running in the background.

Mediatomb is an UPNP sever but on linux only and with absolutly no update ;)

Sorting media can be done by javascript import if compiled with --enable-libjs and activated in config.xml
Code:

<virtual-layout type="js">
Cross platform UPNP server there is http://twonky.com/ (not free).

Xbmc is probably the most friendly and powerfull with samba and also have a basic UPNP server function.

Does anyone here have a link I can start from? I have used mediatomb in the past, but I could not get it to stream to a computer. I looked into icecast and they seem to be having some problems with stability lately and are trying to submit a patch to add vp8 support. Mediatomb is interesting, but how would I access it from vlc?

To stream to Meadiatomb from a PC simply open the VLC Playlist: Local Network > Universal Plug'n'Play > your Mediatomb server should appear here.

It worked. On a side note: I just bought a boxee and I was wondering if it would pick up my mediatomb server.
