Me again!win98+m8 dual boot moreinfo

Ok posted before but here is more info
but here is the full story again..,

It appears a bit of a teaser for even some linux gurus, so do i have a chance?? Could you maybe please help me to understand what is going on?.
Ok here goes: (Btw i have been at this for nearly 4 months now with different hardware configs an different machines too and very limited success)
Before i start i might like to mention that this distro of linux Mandrake 8 installed on my freinds machine perfectly well without glitch and his system is similar to mine (ie same board an cpu) i know its not a lot of similarity but it goes on his fine, grrrr i think the penguin has it out for me

Firstly here are my system specs:
P111 733mghz
133mhgz bus
gigabyte mainboard, version:GA-6VXE7+
128mb dimms (2x64)
Mitsumi CR-480TE cd/dvdrom and cdrw ((in IDE1 as Slave))
(Various CDrom's have been tried from x4 speed to x32)

- 1st HD: Seagate U4 ST38421A 8.4 gig which i am trying to dual boot with win98 (( IDE2 as Master))
Windows given 3gig an linux given around 5 gig

- 2nd HD :Western Digital Caviar. (lol@the name eww fish eggs) 22500 AT compatible intelligent drive (win storage) (( IDE2 as slave))

Graphics Card : AGP MatroxG400 dual head 32mb

Sound Card: PCI ESS Maestro-2 1968

Monitor : IBM 2122 152 monitor capable or 1024x768 res

Modem: Rockwell US robotics external Sportster Flash 56k (cant afford cable :[ )

ho yeh an a generic floppy much the same as anyother.

Ok so my problems are many where do i begin .. i will list
Beginning of the install:

1- Sometimes i get an error
Invalid data------ CRC ERROR

2- Segmentation Fault 'seems like memory is missing as the install crashes'

3- or during the partition stage of the install
-'Idconfig failed'
-'Error no HD lists found'

4- During package install i somtimes get Error "*" invalid file an the install halts i mean proper freezes no just halts install an reboots.

5- Also in ramdom places of the install i sometimes get a crash of the install with the following message,

Error opening security policy file /user/x11R6/lib/x11/xserver/security policy
says its safe to reboot etc etc

6- The most problems i am having are with packages dropping during install
''there was an error installing packages - ( names the package ie gdk-pixbuf-0.10-1mdk.i586)
go any way?? yes/no

It drops packages randomly i mean just any one it feels like at the time i guess no apparent (that i know of) reason why it chooses the ones it does, they are different each time.
So as a result of this it doesnt load the full install of linux (to a point where nearly nothing works)or i keep having to continually go back to the packages to install screen.

I also get boot loader failiures and right at the end of the install the xwindows server crashes too an returns me to the pix pic of the penguin with no graphical interface.
i have also tried to install this distro by copying it to my win partition an using the dosutils to make a boot disk an no luck does the same as above

Its a swine cause i have been so close to haveing the full install an something goes wrong or doesnt work .., very frustrating, only to find out in various other linux forums that no-one knows the answer??.
I cant even seem to install the basic linux Os with one gui (kde or gnome).

Completely desperate an worn down by the whole thing, pleeeeeeeeaaasssseee help lol

OK. This is just a guess. Maybe you have memory problems. Maybe you need to reseat all your cards and check your cables.

pppd problems

Ok my modem is an external 56k rockwell US robotics modem ., fully supported by m-8 i believe.
The problem lies with the pppd communicating with the server on initial connect. I get an error...,
Error daemon dies unexpectedly ..., this i think is due to a timeout problem somewhere (maybe lol)
When i look at the log it jus says 'modem hangs up SIGHUP' or summat like that.
So i figured i may need an updated version of my ppp dialer?? btw i am using KDE.
Anyhow it jus keeps dropping the connection, my ISP doesnt support for linux so i have to rely on the expertees of u guys an inputsurfin an yes i have RTFM an there dont appear to be an answer to it, unless i missed it.
Btw i am lovin been a linux (linnux as some call it heh) some great error messages lmao.

jus wish i could get on the net heh.., any suggestions???

I've not had a lot to do with ppp as I've got cable
rolf's post would be a good start for a solution as would a google/linux search using the error message your getting from ppp. As for the program you downloaded, I'm assuming its a tar.gz format source code, then you have to open a terminal window (konsole in kde) cd to the directory where you extracted the contents of the downloaded file and do "./configure"<enter> then after that finishes do "make"<enter> then su to root and do "make install" <enter> then run the program and see if it works.......easy when you think about
Don't worry too much if something won't work first time with linux, half the fun is working out how to get it going and you'll learn a hell of a lot about how computer hardware and software interact on the way.

but like u said its all a new experience that will pay off soon hopefully (well considering i got the learnin curve of a half brick it may be later rather than soon lol)

However Thanx u ppl for the info!!! i will go an drown myself in the command line now heh.

L8rz

jus as a matter of info.., when i unpack the tgz does it matter which directory i unpack it to? or is that after the install is made?

I'm using KDE and in any version later then 2.1 you can right click on a .tgz file and select "extract here" if you do that in your "home" directory you'll get a new directory named the same as the .tgz (or close to) without the .tgz :/
click on that directory and then click on "Window">>"Show Terminal Emulator" in the Konqueror toolbar, once the terminal window opens do the ./configure...etc... commands as per my previous post, and have fun
Thats what its all about.

My modem dials out

One of the things I did to get the modem working had something to do with
LtModem drivers. First, I need to know the chipset of the modem. Then,
I would visit the vender with that particular chipset. The modem issue was
a 3 month search. Finally, I got it working. I would need to be at my
redhat machine to get the particular steps working.

http://www.linmodems.org/

I visited this site because my particular modem was consider a 'winmodem'
The first step is I identify the chipset of the modem.
