Mdk 9.0

Hi,

It's now the 7 or 8th time I reinstall Mdk9.0/9.1 this week and I'm getting pissed at it.

Here's a little story: I managed to install mdk9.0 for the first serious time (I done this before just to take a look at Nix) and got everything working as wanted (with various number of servers like DHCP, DNS, etc.). Then when I tried to install Nessus, I realised I had some dependancies missing so I installed the required packages. Then I rebooted and after that the system hanged so I rebooted again and I got the Kernel init error and I did not have the kernel how-to at my disposition so I decided to reinstall everything under 9.1 (thinking it would be nice since it should include the missing packages). The installation did not worked at all (could not log in kde or gnome). So I retried the installation 2 more times with similar results. I then got frustrated and tried 9.0 again and it worked (except I still could not get access to my gnome desktop (only kde seem to work). I managed to reinstall everything (took me en entire night). My Internet connection and sharing is now working as I want and I'm in the process of reinstalling Nessus and other stuff I would like to have. So I started to install some packages included with the distro of 9.0 and rebooted. Now, there's a lot of missing things in my task bar including the kde control panel. It's being very frustrating to install an OS that's supposed to be better then Windoze and getting so much errors, so much retries, so much problems with the configuration. I even realised the the linuxconf included with mdk9.0 uses ipchains as firewall knowing that with 2.4.19-22 kernels it's iptables that is supported and not ipchains!!! (why did they included that package if t ain't good for that kernel version???) Anyways, what I want to know is: if I use another distro like red hat, will my patience be put at test again for the same reasons? Is it me that do things wrong?

Please help me calm down on mdk/Nix since I do not think great things of it by now.

it seems to me like your just rishing thru and kinda going a bit mad. take your time installing mdk9.1, READ all the intrustions carefully. make sure your partitions are right (xxxmb swap, /), and make sure u select the configuration option at install.

i have installed mandrake 9.1 and 9 on many machines and i havent had any problems (exept for some hardware issues like internal modem) but i figured them out easily.

and another tip, dont use the "individual package selection" option on install, sometimes it mucks things up
