Having run various distro's on my P450 [Red Hat, Mandrake 7, Corel], I am having problems installing RedHat 6.2 on my new twin processor PIII with a Matrox G450 dual head. I can install fine if I use my old Matrox Productiva card. Linux recognises the G450 as a G400 and my monitor refresh/scan rates are wrong. I can manually configure XF86Config with the default SVGA server and get 320 x 240? but no better. The Linux drivers from Matrox will not compile when I follow the README - the compile locks up about 5 minutes into the process.

I also want to add the RAID drivers supplied Promise to my kernel, but when I perform an expert install, load the drivers, reboot and re-compile the kernel they are not added.

Please help - I am out of my depth here and have only started using Linux on a non-standard box ....

try XF86Setup for the install of the card.It wont give you any better driver but its easy to setup a SVGA server that will give you 800*640,just pick a generic monitor thats close to specs or yours if its listed.The default vga of 640*480 is shite.As for raid...every where I go the Promise drivers dont work.If you want raid checkout http://www.linuxdoc.org and do a search for software raid.its not to hard to setup.IDE is a CPU hog so the tiny difference between your raid card and software wont be an issue.If you want true blow my head off wow this is fast raid,then save those pennies and get a scsi raid controller and a couple of scsi disks to start.

Thanks for that, SSADAMS. I agree, the Promise drivers are pretty ropey, but unfortunately RAID is on the motherboard and I cannot turn it off [I could of course daisy chain my drives on the standard IDE interface but I would loose 30Gb of data and would then need to do a BIG restore] so I am comitted to this.

I take your point about SCSI RAID - If I had any money left I would do that :-(

I will try the standard XF86Setup and will post the results.
