I'm really annoyed that my maple is rooted in /home/$home/maple
Inside the maple directory it seems to have a somewhat canonical layout. Maybe I'm just being picky, but this is driving my nuts. Besides I want to install it globally.
I haven't actually tried to install it with root permissions. Does anyone know how it behaves?
has anyone ever manually relocated the directories?
Since nobody has replied to this thread, I will. Have you tried contacting Maplesoft? You must have paid for a licence, so you should be entitled to support.

Thanks for the reply. I have it on a university license. I guess I'll try giving maplesoft a call.
Also try your university IT place, if there are any Linux people there..
Edit: Or, failing that, give us more details about what happens when you try to install it. I've just checked the installation log for Maple on my university's systems and it suggests that it allows you to specify a directory in which to install. I didn't install it, but I'd assume, then, that it asks you where it should be installed..
There was a prompt which asked me where I wanted to install it. I had suspicions that since it was a windows port it would throw things in the wrong places and I didn't want to end up with a /usr/local/maple.
Based on the prefix you pick it creates a maple directory, but inside that it pretty much looks like a canonical installation.
I'll try asking around the IT department on campus. In theory someone should know something. Last time I had my laptop in there the Tech's noticed I was running linux and asked for help fixing grub.
I see what you mean. Our installation of maple just has a directory called maple, with all the other directories inside it (e.g. bin, man and lib). You could just stick it in /opt (i.e. use /opt as the prefix), of course and then create symbolic links in /usr/bin, /usr/local/bin, or wherever you want them.
