Mandy Shut Down

When I go to log out of many and to reboot my computer... it logs me out of my name and there is an option there that says reboot ot halt... so i click reboot... another mandrake screen comes on that says ok and back... and has a text box w/ nothing in it... So when i log out of linux i have to use the button on my pc to shut it down and then turn it back on to get into my other os...

Any 1 know how to fix this??

and could it be related to my other problem on booting up i get
Finding Module Dependencies: lmd_validate_partition_table() Disk Read Failed ???

And if so how would i go about fixing that.....

Also in my LILO Boot loader when it loads up... it has like 5 options?!?!
Linux
Linux-nofb
Windows
Floppy
failsafe

What is this?

Those 5 options are normal. They're as stated failsafe or backup boot options incase of boot problems.

I think the shutdown screen should be a list of [OK]ed items, not just 1. Possibly due to the booting error, as shutting down is almost the reverse process.

ok... but any idea how to fix that problem?

You didnt try writing to your XP ntfs drive did you? The support for writing is only beta and not stable. Is XP ok?

Nefarious 04-16-2003 01:52 PM

Have you been logging in as root? Maybe you've messed up a kernel module?

You might have to recompile your kernel or at least the module who's having errors.

Nefarious 04-16-2003 02:00 PM

ive logged into root yes all the time.... but like ever sincei installed and booted up i got that error on the boot up.. the lmd_validate_partition_table() Disk Read Failed

Proud 04-16-2003 02:07 PM

Have you configured that much or can you wipe your install and try again?
Are you using downloaded cds? Have you checksummed the ISOs? And the burned cds?

Logging in as root is bad. Means you can easily screw up your system, and any code run is as root too (eg nasty malicious code/exploits via your browser or services connected to the web). Hence KDE's Krootwarning splashscreen and Mandrake forcing you to make an everyday-use account. :)

If the problem is with the kernel module and not dodgy install cds, I cant help you. I cant help you either way really. :D

Nefarious 04-16-2003 02:15 PM

Well... i d/l the iso's and checked the md5 and it was fine....

No I config... a bit and when i mean i log in as root when im in konsole and need to install something i su to root and do it otherwise thats it....... i havent een done much w/ it that i could have screwed up nething at all.... if I don't know what it does or havent been told by a linux guru on what to do... i really havent touched it then

Proud 04-16-2003 02:20 PM

Well I dont think I can do much more for you. :(
Gooling Module Dependencies didnt seem to help much.

Nefarious 04-16-2003 03:32 PM

wowowow... im back on linux ... but it told me that it was unmounted weird and wow... that was scary... lol.... and ummm now i also saw that error the lmd_validate_partitions_table() Disk Read Failed w/ xine somehting liek that... dunoo oif its an error from that or what not...

What's your setup as in hardrives and other read-write devices?

Nefarious 04-16-2003 10:04 PM

what do you mean?

BruceCadieux 04-17-2003 05:02 AM

I was having the same problem with two mandrake 9.1 machines.

I went into the mandrake Control Center, Boot Options and switched from the default Mandrake login screen to the KDE login screen. The problem went away.

Nefarious 04-17-2003 11:56 AM

where woldi go to do this in the boot options... dont see it
