I upgraded my Mandrake 9.2 system to Mandriva Limited Edititon 2005 and since then I have problems with the system hanging when I enter a login from the graphical login screen. The cursor returns to a pointer instead of an hour glass and just sits there. The text console login ports work just fine. When I tell the system to boot the failsafe option of the graphical boot it comes up and I can log in just fine. I'm using lilo as boot loader. On the boot options the failsafe says /boot/vmlinuz which is just the same as the default linux option. I'm confused. The boot options show in the Mandrake Control Center shows the default entry linux(/boot/vmlinuz)* linux-nonfb(/boot/vmlinuz) failsafe(/boot/vmlinuz) Here is the /boot/vmlinuz listing. lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 Jan 29 06:09 vmlinuz -> vmlinuz-2.6.11-6mdksmp -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 880346 Sep 20 2002 vmlinuz-2.4.19-16mdk -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1252778 Mar 14 2003 vmlinuz-2.4.21-0.13mdk -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1343803 Sep 18 2003 vmlinuz-2.4.22-10mdk -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1354494 Sep 18 2003 vmlinuz-2.4.22-10mdksmp -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1609740 Mar 22 2005 vmlinuz-2.6.11-6mdksmp lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 23 Sep 26 2004 vmlinuz-smp -> vmlinuz-2.4.22-10mdksmp It looks to me like it is booting the same kernel each time. So how does it know "linux" from "failsafe". CAn anyone help??? Ed
I would strongly suggest you make a backup of your configuration and home directories and do a fresh (non-upgrade) install of 2006.0 (2005 is old). You are jumping 3 versions ahead (should jump 4), and I never have very good luck with any type of Linux in-place upgrade.
failsafe causes linux to boot into runlevel 1 then it tries to switch (probably) to runlevel 5 in mandriva. check the X logs for anything strange then maybe try running Linuxconf and reconfigure the system.
I copied my mandrake 10 system over to another partition, tested that it worked, and then did an upgrade with 2006... Tho the upgrade worked, there were many issues...
So I wiped that and did a clean install of 2006 on that new partiton. Much better. Didn't take to long to reinstall all the software and set up. I copied the games binaries directly from the old install, even tho I went from 32bit to 64 bit...
Just about everything has worked fine and I have crossover and cedega apps. Only thing I've lost in win4lin due to the 64bit...
