I am trying to install software using the mandriva install software program in kde, the problem is mandriva is on a dvd, I have a cdrw drive in my computer as well as a dvd rom (installed mandriva from the dvd rom drive) but the mandriva software install program keeps opening my cdrw and wanting me to put the media in, how do I tell it to use the dvd rom drive and no the cdrw drive? as of now I am unable to install the packages I need.
What you will need to do is fix the urpmi.cfg. This can be accomplished easily one of two ways, depending on your skills and comfort level.
Novice:
Open the Mandriva Control Center (System->Configuration->Configure your computer).
In the Software Management tab, select the "rpm" box icon.
Next, select the media you wish to edit (main on my ssytem), and press the edit button.
The url should look something like "removable:///mnt/cdrom". Change this to where the dvd mounts (i.e. removable:///mnt/dvd) and press ok (note: this information is in your /etc/fstab file, or you can insert a dvd and see where it mounts to).
Press ok to save the changes, and exit the control center. Now it should eject the dvd when it needs to insert the installation disk.
Advanced method:
edit /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg, search and replace /mnt/cdrom (or /mnt/cdrw) with /mnt/dvd (check /etc/fstab for correct mount points).
One problem you may encounter, the drives sometimes will change order after a reboot, even though they are jumpered correctly for master/slave. My dvd-rom will occasionally swap with my dvdrw. In this case, I fix the fstab file accordingly. Not sure if this is a Mandriva bug or a bios issue.
@GrueMaster: i used the first method, but sometimes, it said, cannot install etc etc due to unsatisfied xxx xxxx...
I've copied all the rpm on my dvd to local harddrives and i add custom to direct Mandriva to /usr/mandrake
but if i also insert the dvd to my dvdrom, it will install smoothly...
am i missing something here?
Use better thread titles in future please, i.e. ones that actually describe the problem you're having. Common sense really .
thanks for all the help guys, appreciate it.
Nylex, don't worry about it, just ignore threads with vague titles then... not to mentioned I tried to edit it once done and this forum will not allow you to edit titles for reason.
urpmi needs more than just the rpm files. It also uses the hdlist files as a database, which it imports into it's own system. If you are going to copy from the dvd, you should copy the entire cd, directory structures intact. That way urpmi can easily reference what it needs.
