I'm a total NEWBIE to linux, especially on a PPC. I've installed Linux of multiple flavors on PC's, but this is my first try on a MAC (PPC). I just downloaded Mandrake Linux's newest 10.1 ISO's and successfully created three CDs.
On the first CD, I DO see a "boot" folder. I've tried this on a PowerMac G4 450 and also on an iMac G3 350, and neither will boot off the CD-ROM.
I currently have OS X (10.2 on the G3 and 10.3 on the G4) installed, and I have held down the "C" key on the keyboard to boot from CD. I can hear the drive start up, but then I get the OS X loading screen and it will not install.
Has anyone else had problems with this? I'm an experienced PC and MAC guy, but not with Linux.
Thanks for any and all suggestions in advance! I look forward to seeing (with probably an easy fix) Linux on my PPCs!
Hi, after Cmd-Opt-O-F to get into open firmware, it's
boot cd:,\boot\yaboot
to boot the 10.1 distribution CD. After that all should be well.
This information is in the Release Notes, you should read them. If this is your first experience trying to install Linux, be very careful, it's easy to destroy your MacOS X in the process if you don't know what you're doing in the first stages (disk partitioning and setup).
I've been having the same problem with a PowerBook Lombard. The Mandrake site says that the two are compatilbe, but won't boot from YaBoot or BootX.
The same CDs will work on two different iMacs perfectly..... Once the screen said Booting Linux PPC but then went blank and never came back on.
