Mandrake install MURDERED my CDROM!
When installing Mandrake onto another PC, I encountered a major problem...
After partition changes, it told me to reboot, so I did. Now my CDROM is dead. It won't open or close manually. The PC boots into nothingness. Why is my CD-ROM completely dead? |
Check this link http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/lgerrata.php3 you may have an LG CDROM
|
Okay; I'll try that, but my CD-ROM is dead as a door-nail, it won't even open or close on the BIOS startup or BIOS setup menus!
[EDIT] I don't think I have that type of CD-ROM. |
Mandrake only kills LG drives. They are cheap. Get a new and better drive. Use a paperclip to open the drive door manually (that little hole in the front panel.
|
It was in the install program. It only stopped working when I rebooted after partitioning. Now the CD-ROM will not work anywhere.
I already opened the drive prior to your post. I do not believe it is an LG drive. |
well then, it just sounds like your drive died then...
get a new one |
hm... LG CD-ROMs have an "LG" thingie in the front. Maybe you should look for it?
|
It doesn't have any "LG" on it or on the BIOS whatsoever.
I'm starting to think it's a hardware-related issue; perhaps the CD-ROM just died of old age? :) |
My problem is identical to this one , it that's any help.
|
Not all LG drives are labelled as such - many shipped with Compaq or Dell systems. That was my own situation; I didn't think to check the drive in my older Dell and I killed it with Mdk9.2. At that point it wouldn't even boot far enough to get into BIOS. I threw out the drive and put in another drive I had lying around.
|
Okay, thanks. I'll probably end up doing that.
|
If you're running Mandrake, use harddrake & see if it detects your drive or not. If not, then manually open the drive and insert a knoppix disk and boot from there. Look at the lines in /etc/fstab in knoppix & copy them out of the ramdisk to the fstab of your mandrake partition. Then reboot and see.
|
I lost a CD Rom as well. I could not install Mandrake 9.2 because I kept getting errors. Then my CD rom drive burn out.
|
I replaced the CDROM and installed Windows 98 on it. :-D
